Understanding Female Hair Loss Causes and Solutions

Hair loss, or alopecia, affects the scalp or other body parts. It occurs for several reasons, including genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances, psychological stress, medical conditions, and natural aging. For women, Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), or androgenetic alopecia, impacts approximately 50% of women and is often inherited from either side of the family lineage. Although hair loss is known to skip generations, it typically manifests in some family members, indicating a genetic link.

FPHL begins as early as the late teenage years and often worsens after menopause due to hormonal changes. Women experiencing this may notice gradual hair thinning that develops into more significant distress. However, a viable solution exists for those affected: female hair transplantation. This procedure offers an effective means to restore hair growth and improve the quality of life for women suffering from hair loss.

What is Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL)?

Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) is a progressive miniaturization of hair follicles due to an abnormal hormonal response. This process results in follicles producing smaller hairs over time rather than being lost entirely.

In women, FPHL often starts with a noticeable widening of the part line and mild recession at the temples. Some women may begin to see a thinner ponytail and difficulty styling their hair as they prefer. As the condition advances, the expression of the gene responsible for FPHL leads to varying degrees of thinning, primarily at the top of the head, progressing at different rates.

FPHL may or may not be accompanied by noticeable hair shedding. In many cases, the thinning is subtle, affecting the top of the scalp and the sides and back. Unlike male pattern baldness, which typically involves a receding hairline or distinct bald spots, women usually experience a general sparseness at the crown. Although women rarely lose all their hair, untreated FPHL can lead to progressively thinner hair. At this stage, a female hair transplant offers an effective solution.

If you are a female struggling with thinning hair, bald spots, receding hairlines, or eyebrow thinning, contact Dr. Cesar today to schedule a consultation and discover how female restoration can help. Call ILEA Hair Restoration at 832-991-5411 today to schedule your appointment to learn more.

Hair Transplant for Women Using FUE

A hair transplant is one of the most popular hair loss treatments for a woman struggling with female pattern balding. This procedure improves baldness in women by replacing hair loss from the hairline, top, and crown of the scalp using hairs from the sides and back of the patient’s head. Dr. Cesar focuses on creating the appearance of a full, thick head of hair using a specific hair transplant method.

Comparing Male and Female Hair Transplants

Androgenetic alopecia, or pattern hair loss, is a hormonally induced genetic condition affecting both men and women. While they are similar in some ways, they each have distinct differences.

The differences include:

  • Onset age
  • Affected scalp regions
  • Associated health conditions

Women generally experience:

  • Diffuse thinning across the entire scalp, with more pronounced thinning on top.

Men often exhibit:

  • Thinning at the crown and front of the head, leading to a receding hairline or bald spots.

Given these differing patterns of hair loss, the approach to hair transplantation varies between genders. Male hair transplants typically focus on areas to restore hairline and coverage, whereas female hair transplants aim to enhance overall hair volume. This tailored approach ensures that each patient’s needs are met, providing practical and natural-looking results.

How Does a Hair Transplant Work for a Woman?

Before your hair transplant procedure, Dr. Cesar works with you to agree on the appearance and location of your hairline. Then, before the surgery begins, Dr. Cesar draws on the hairline. The team then shaves the donor area (back and sides of the scalp). For women with longer hair, the harvest area is covered easily after the procedure. Next, Dr. Cesar sterilizes the transplant area thoroughly and applies a local anesthetic to numb the skin. Patients also receive a sedative to help them further relax throughout the procedure.

Hair transplants for women are considered virtually painless. There may be mild discomfort when the local anesthetic is injected, but after that, the patient may relax.

Once comfortable and sedated, Dr. Cesar begins the procedure by taking the individual follicles out of the donor area of the scalp. He takes only every 4th to 6th follicle, leaving plenty of hair to cover where the grafts are taken. It also preserves enough hair for future transplants.

Once the hairs are harvested, he creates small slits in the recipient area of the scalp and implants the hair follicles into the opening. Learn more about hair transplant cost in Texas.

Female Hair Transplant: Results and Recovery

Many women prefer the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique offered by the top hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Cesar Aristeiguieta. The FUE transplant is perfect for women due to its minimal post-procedural pain and discomfort compared to the strip procedure. In the FUE method, a small area of the scalp is trimmed, and the transplanted area is subsequently concealed by longer hair.

Unlike the strip procedure, FUE does not result in a linear scar, allowing patients to maintain shorter hairstyles without visible scarring.

After undergoing FUE, patients receive detailed instructions to help them recover and heal the newly transplanted follicles. Scabs or crusts will form on the new grafts, which should be gently soaked off. Temporary swelling, aching, and tightness may occur around the forehead and eyes.

It is recommended that vigorous exercise be avoided for several days after the transplant. Generally, a week is sufficient for healing, after which normal activities, including shampooing and rubbing the scalp, can be resumed.

The female hair transplant procedure is well tolerated, but certain precautions are necessary:

  • Avoid dyeing your hair for two weeks
  • refrain from taking blood-thinning medications or supplements immediately after the procedure
  • Sleeping in an elevated position for the first 72 hours post-transplant is advisable to minimize swelling.

Female Hair Transplant Results*

A common question regarding hair transplants is their longevity. Can a hair transplant last a lifetime? Generally, when hair is transplanted to thinning areas, it grows for the rest of your life. Approximately six months after a female hair transplant, the transplanted hair begins to look natural.

FUE and strip procedures result in a natural appearance of the transplanted follicles. New hair growth typically starts three to six months post-operation, with the transplanted hairs “settling in” and continuing to grow for the patient’s lifetime. It’s important to note that achieving full coverage and optimal results may require more than one procedure.

How Much Do Hair Transplants for Women Cost?

The cost of a hair transplant for women can vary significantly based on several factors, including:

  • Surgery Center Fees: Different centers have varying costs associated with their services.
  • Surgeon’s Fee: The experience and reputation of the hair transplant surgeon can influence the fee.
  • Treatment Area Size: Treating a larger area, such as a full head of hair, will be more expensive than a smaller area.
  • Number of Grafts: The more hair grafts required, the higher the overall cost.

Estimated Costs

Hair transplant procedures typically range from a few thousand dollars to over $10,000. Since hair transplants are considered cosmetic procedures, they are generally not covered by insurance. This means patients should be prepared to cover the entire cost out of pocket.

Other Popular Hair Restoration Solutions

Eyebrow Transplant Surgery

Eyebrow transplants provide a permanent solution for women struggling with missing, sparse, or thin brows. The treatment involves taking donor hairs from the scalp and transplanting them into the eyebrows. This allows the patient’s hair to grow and fill in their brows. The result looks natural and is long-lasting. Our goal in eyebrow restoration is to enhance or restore your eyebrows to a more youthful appearance. The results are dramatic!

How Does Eyebrow Restoration Work?

Eyebrow transplant surgery is a minimally invasive procedure. This female hair loss service is a same-day, in-office treatment. It typically takes between 3 and 5 hours to complete. Eyebrow restoration does involve the use of local anesthesia. Additional medication like a sedative may be given as needed.

Dr. Cesar takes donor hairs from the patient’s scalp during the procedure. He then artfully transplants them into the brow line. The eyebrow restoration procedure provides full, lush, and skillfully shaped brows.

Hairline Lowering Surgery

Many women struggle with high hairlines or a prominent forehead, leading to embarrassment and self-consciousness. Thankfully, hairline lowering with Dr. Cesar addresses hairline receding and creates a normal, attractive forehead you will not want to hide.

Low-level Light Therapy (LLLT)

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) stimulates cellular regeneration within the hair follicles. Dr. Cesar offers the CapillusPro Cap, a laser cap equipped with LLLT. This device is comfortable to wear and designed to be worn just 6 minutes each day. Best of all, the device is FDA-cleared and scientifically proven to prevent hair loss and stimulate hair growth.

How Does the Capillus Cap Work?

Studies done on the laser cap for hair growth prevents hair loss and stimulate hair growth by:
According to studies, LLLT significantly increases hair density in females struggling with androgenetic alopecia or female pattern balding.

Selphyl Plasma System

The Selphyl System is designed to extract natural growth factors present in your body sand prepare them for injection into scalp areas suffering from hair loss. Other systems require operator skills and have different results or extensive contamination risks. However, the Selphyl Plasma System removes all chances of contamination and is independent of the operator technique.

How Does Selphyl Work?

Selphyl is a completely closed system and extracts natural growth factors with precision. The addition of calcium chloride (a small amount of medical salt) holds the growth factors in place for several days, allowing for a prolonged treatment. Best of all, the Selphyl treatment takes less than an hour to be performed in Dr. Cesar’s office. The number of treatments needed depends on your individual needs, aesthetic goals, and Dr. Cesar’s plan. Generally, a minimum of 4 treatments over 6 months are required to see results.

Scalp Micropigmentation

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), also known as medical scalp tattooing, creates the appearance of a fuller, thicker head of hair. It is a great hair restoration treatment for both men and women suffering from alopecia, balding, or thin hair. In addition, the procedure corrects cosmetic concerns like scars, burns, and bald spots. SMP replicates the appearance of hair follicles using advanced micropigmentation techniques.

How Does Scalp Micropigmentation Work?

Dr. Cesar uses unparalleled knowledge to assess each patient, determining the reason for hair loss. Then, he listens to your concerns and provides the necessary insight. For an SMP, Dr. Cesar evaluates the scalp using a video microscope and shows the patient the results during the initial consultation. Next, he formulates a treatment plan typically consisting of three sessions (a fourth session is free of charge if needed.) The SMP sessions are spaced 14 days apart.
During your session, Dr. Cesar maps the hairlines or treatment area. Although some patients do not require scalp anesthesia for the procedure, we are able to provide such as needed. Dr. Cesar then micro pigments the area to replicate the appearance of hair follicles. Afterward, patients notice a thick, full appearance where they struggle with balding or hair thinning.
The second treatment adds additional layers of micropigmentation. This further improves the density and fullness, allowing Dr. Cesar to blend the micropigmentation into the existing hair for the most natural appearance.
A 3rd (and sometimes 4th) session is needed because the pigmentation fades between sessions. These additional sessions allow Dr. Cesar to fill in any areas that may have faded. By layering the treatments, the microdots placed on the scalp begin taking on a 3-dimensional appearance. Lighter and darker microdots also result in a more natural appearance.
Dr. Cesar is the only hair restoration surgeon in Houston that performs SMP himself. This brings unique insight and cosmetic detail to patients seeking such treatment.
It is also important to note that even though Scalp Micropigmentation is nicknamed “hair tattooing,” a barber or tattoo artist should never oversee it. For this skill dependent hair loss treatment to be safe, dependable, and effective, you need a licensed and professional hair specialist like Dr. Cesar.
